Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 8×8-inch baking pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg.
  3. In a large bowl, combine melted butter and brown sugar until smooth.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then stir in vanilla extract and molasses.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  6. Fold in chocolate chips if using.
  7. Pour batter into prepared pan and spread evenly.
