  • ⅔ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon fresh orange zest
  • 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional: coarse sugar for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, ground cloves, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg, orange zest, orange juice, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  6. Roll dough into 1-inch balls and place them 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets.
  7. Optionally, sprinkle the tops with coarse sugar for extra crunch and sparkle.
  8. Bake for 10–12 minutes or until cookies are slightly golden around the edges.
  9. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

Notes

For a deeper flavor, let the dough rest refrigerated for an hour before baking and enjoy with a hot cup of tea.
