homemade mozzarella sticks

Crispy, golden-brown homemade mozzarella sticks made with fresh mozzarella and a crunchy breadcrumb coating, perfect as a tasty appetizer or snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 sticks of fresh mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 1/2 cups Italian seasoned breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian herbs
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Marinara sauce, for serving

Instructions

  1. Cut mozzarella cheese into 3-inch sticks and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Freeze for at least 1 hour.
  2. Set up a breading station with three shallow bowls: one with flour, one with beaten eggs mixed with milk, and one with breadcrumbs, Parmesan, garlic powder, and Italian herbs combined.
  3. Remove mozzarella sticks from freezer. Dredge each stick in flour, shaking off excess.
  4. Dip floured stick in egg mixture, then coat thoroughly with breadcrumb mixture.
  5. For extra crispiness, repeat the egg and breadcrumb coating once more.
  6. Place coated sticks back on the baking sheet and freeze for another 30 minutes.
  7. Heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C) in a deep fryer or heavy skillet.
  8. Fry mozzarella sticks in batches for 1-2 minutes until golden brown and crispy. Do not overcrowd the pan.
  9. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  10. Serve immediately with warm marinara sauce.

Notes

For a healthier option, bake the mozzarella sticks at 400°F (200°C) for 8-10 minutes instead of frying.
