Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large onions, sliced into 1/4-inch rings
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup cold sparkling water
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Separate the onion slices into individual rings and set aside.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and black pepper.
  3. Add cold sparkling water gradually, stirring until a smooth batter forms.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Dip each onion ring into the batter, then coat with panko breadcrumbs.
  6. Carefully fry the coated rings in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per batch.
  7. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  8. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

For extra crunch, double-dip the onion rings by repeating the batter and breadcrumb coating before frying.
