French Toast Casserole

This French Toast Casserole is a deliciously rich and custardy baked breakfast treat, perfect for leisurely mornings or brunch gatherings.

  • 1 loaf of day-old bread, cubed
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • Optional: maple syrup, fresh berries for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Place the cubed bread evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes, pressing gently to soak.
  5. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight for best results.
  6. In a small bowl, mix brown sugar and melted butter until combined.
  7. Before baking, sprinkle the brown sugar mixture evenly over the soaked bread.
  8. Bake uncovered for 45-50 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.
  9. Remove from oven and let cool slightly before serving.
  10. Serve warm with maple syrup and fresh berries if desired.

Notes

For extra crunch, sprinkle chopped nuts like pecans or walnuts on top before baking.
