Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices of thick bread (such as brioche or challah), cubed
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • Powdered sugar, for serving (optional)
  • Maple syrup, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter.
  2. Place the cubed bread evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes, pressing down gently to soak the bread.
  5. Drizzle melted butter evenly over the top.
  6. Cover the baking dish with foil and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight for best results.
  7. Bake covered for 30 minutes, then remove the foil and bake an additional 15-20 minutes until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.
  8. Let it cool for 5 minutes before serving. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and drizzle with maple syrup if desired.

Notes

For added texture, sprinkle chopped nuts or berries on top before baking, or serve with fresh fruit to enhance the dish.
